One of the things that have fascinated me these days is the zeal of the youth to get rich at all cost; the youth of today is always looking for the easiest way to make it in life. Every economy flourishes when young men take up entrepreneurial roles in order to build their future, but what do we see in our part of the world, young men are utilizing the social media-driven the world to milk people out of their flat breasts.
Social media, according to my MIS lecturer would have been the third most populated country in the world if it was a country. This, therefore, means that nations, businesses, NGOs and individuals have utilized social media wisely and economically to gain a global positive image. But what do we see in our part of the world? Internet fraud (scam), ignorant about social media, and I think you can name them more.
I believe that since the beginning of time, sustainable life is accomplished by hard work and of course the Holy books have said a lot about this. But emphatically, young men and women are knocking at every door just to own what others have labored for in their whole life. Everybody wants to wear all the fanciful clothes, eat all the delicious meals without any correspondent hard work. The society is changing but the question we should ask ourselves is this; is the change a positive or a negative and are we siding with the later or the former?
In everything you do there are principles guiding that; in order to be reborn you must be sacrificed, which means people must die so that new ones can be born; a child must crawl before s/he walks; you write an exam before you get a results; the moon must cross the sky before day breaks and must you work hard before you succeed. The principles of success have been underestimated which was supposed to be and are still the keys to every successful end.
I remember the good old days when elders used to play their roles effectively; when landlords used to be the real owners of the house; and when mothers used to be the interviewee of their daughters’ blemish. Everything was perfect then and society was literally friendly.
During a sermon yesterday, I was so touched when the Imam said that ‘parents should be very inquisitive about their ward’s activities. Your child is wearing fanciful clothes, using expensive phones, meanwhiles he/she is not engaged in any economic activity and you as a parent did not also buy those things for them.’ This is what is happening today and the relevant entities gigantically fold their arms and watch. But for me what I have for them is that we shall all pay for the inefficiency of the society if these conducts are not checked today.
I don’t have a problem if even a young boy at the age of 13 wants to own a motorbike or car and sleep in a luxurious room. Is a sign of development, but you must earn it in a rightful way.
Recently I went to a barbering saloon to have my hair cut and I overheard two guys conversing about how they are making progress in the scam “business”. One said that a lady from Accra sent him a friend request and after accepting the lady again sent a message saying “Mallam please help me”.
According to them, the lady said she wanted to be tall (grow tall), and that people make fun of her because she is short but she is ready to do anything to become a tall person so, therefore, the “mallam” should help her with his juju (magic). I said to myself, wow, this is interesting. The guy who has never attended “Makaranta” neither does he know how to recite the holy book, but pretended to be a Mallam and was duping this girl. He drills all the money from this girl and the girl never had what she wanted.
It saddens my heart and breaks my spirit when I see the leaders of tomorrow being abusing this fast growing modernity internet. Victims we've all become of returning quick with unripe fruits, but I surely, 'if you come quick you shall return quick'. Lets us not seek for the quick way to becoming rich, but rather work hard to be rich and your riches will benefit you in this world and the hereafter.
